History

The Department Economics of Trade provides academic training at all levels of higher education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Master’s Degree

  • Doctoral Degree (PhD) in the scientific field Economics and Management (Trade Economics).

Economics of Trade is a long-standing economic program at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE), developed as an independent academic discipline since the university’s early days as a higher education institution.

The specialty was established in 1952 by Decree No. 36 of the Presidium of the National Assembly, dated January 22, 1952, initially under the name Economics and Planning of Domestic Trade. In the official classification of academic fields and specialties from 1983, it was registered as Economics and Management of Trade (State Gazette, Issue 30, April 15, 1983). In the National Register of Educational and Qualification Degrees from 1997 (Council of Ministers Decree No. 86/12.03.1997), it was listed under its current title: Trade Economics.

By decision of the Academic Council, in the 2004/2005 academic year, the Department of Trade Economics was incorporated into the Economics of Infrastructure Faculty.

The curriculum in Economics of Trade is aligned with the current demands of both economic theory and practice, ensuring that graduates are highly competitive on the labor market. The program aims to prepare highly qualified managers and researchers who successfully pursue careers in:

  • specialized trade companies

  • retail chains and food service establishments

  • commercial banks

  • commodity and stock exchanges

  • and through starting their own trade enterprises.

The training is delivered by highly qualified academic staff.

The department’s research activity in the field of Economics of Trade is focused on issues of high relevance to both academic theory and business practice. Its scientific and applied contributions are considered significant.
