As a part of UNWE it is a successor of the Free University for Politic and Economic Sciences (Balkan Near East Institute) founded in 1920 in Sofia, of the State University for Finance and Administrative Sciences (1938), the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences of Sofia State University (SSU) “St. Climent Ohridsky” (1947). The Department is formed in 1947 to the United Faculty for Economic and Social Sciences at SSU “St. Climent Ohridsky”.

Through all these years efforts are made for the training of high qualification specialists at the atmosphere of professionalism, democracy and academism that have given the opportunity for the appearance of prominent scientists recognized of the world statistic community as Acad. Along with the setting up of Karl Marx Higher Institute of Economics (by Council of Ministers Decree №1598/30.12.1951) it has been established a speciality of Statistics renamed later (in 1992) into Statistics and Econometrics and it is still active nowadays.
