History

Department of Mathematics was established in 1963. Initially there have been five lecturers at the department and Head of the Department was Prof. Zdravko Sugarev. Over the years consecutive Heads of the Department have been Prof. Ivan Kirkorov (1976-1990), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sebastian Kamenarov (1991-1994) and current Head of Department since 1995 and on is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dobromir Todorov. During the years of its existence the Department has conducted training in Mathematics for all the students of the University. At different periods of times some mathematical disciplines had also been read to the students in other specialities, such as: Higher Mathematics I and II Part, Probability Theory, Linear Algebra and Mathematical Programming, Financial Mathematics, Insurance Mathematics. The Department fully covers all the mathematical disciplines in Informatics, such as: Discrete Mathematics, Mathematical Analysis I and II Part, Linear Algebra and Analytic Geometry, Algebra, Numerical Methods, Operations Research, Differential Equations.

Currently, the Department consists of 13 lecturers -7 full-tenure and 6 non full-tenure lecturers.

Each year the Department provides the methodological guidance to the students involved in math competitions between the universities at regional level and students have always taken the first two or three positions.

The scientific works of the members of the Department are in the following basic direction: Mathematical Analysis, Probability Theory and Combinatorial Analysis, Mathematical Optimization.
