History

The Department of International Relationships is established in 1976 as a specialized unit with the basic task to provide the training for special and professional academic disciplines to students in the speciality of International Relationships.

Initially appointed to work at the Department were DSc in Economy Liuben Georgiev and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Peter Arsov as well as three Assistants – Georgy Genov, Atanas Gotchev and Dinko Dinkov. Over the period of 1978 -1979 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Angel Nakov and two Assistants more have joined the Department – Igor Damyanov and Boyko Mladenov.

After the withdrawal of Prof. Luben Georgiev in 1981, the remaining seven lecturers have formed the main body of the Department for an extended period of time and they elaborate and defence a modern academic plan of the speciality to the competent academic authorities. They also create and promote some new, not only for Bulgaria, courses of lectures and seminars and specialize in prestigious foreign universities.

Over the 90's of the last century the Department of International Relationships has continued its successful development that was largely favored by the democratization processes of the public and political life in Bulgaria. The Department as a whole and its particular lecturers are given the opportunity to engage in intensive professional contacts with leading universities and research centers in the countries of European Union and USA, including the realization of joint projects.

The transformation of the Higher Institute of Economics into the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) and the establishment of the Faculty of International Economics and Politics there reveals new opportunities for the further approval of the Department of International Relationships as the first unit in Bulgaria for training of specialists in Foreign Policy. In relation to it a necessity of more lecturers has appeared. Over the period of 1997 – 2001 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anthon Parvanov, the Assistants Helena Simeonova and Georgy Tchankov have joined the Department.

The leading of a numerous lecture courses and the realization of the research projects require a collaboration with consolidated specialists from Bulgarian Academy of Sciences as well as from specialized scientific research institutes and state departments. Over the period of 1976 – 2004 more than 30 full-tenure lecturers have worked at the Department. Among them are: Prof. Dr. Enyo Savov, Prof. DSc in History Simeon Damyanov, Prof. DSc in History Andrey Pantev, Prof. DSc in History Miltcho Lalkov, Prof. Doko Dokov, Prof. DSc in Philosophy Velin Boev, Senior Sc. Associate Valo Marinov, Liuben Koulishev, Dr. Ognyan Avramov, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dentcho Georgiev, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emil Panoushev, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jordan Baev, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hristo Georgiev, Dr. Lilyana Maslarova, Dr. Peter Mitov, Dr. Tsvetanka Lozanova, Dr. Andrey Georgiev, Assoc Prof. Dr. Dimitar Loudjev as well as a lot of responsible officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and many others.

Since 1989, the Department of International Relationships has realized the preparation of doctoral students. Among successfully graduated there are also foreign citizens.
