History

Department of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics (FLAL) is one of the largest and the eldest Departments of UNWE that provides specialized training in foreign languages in the field of business communications, diplomacy, etc. in English, German, French, Spanish and Russian that are studied as first and second foreign language. The Department also provides training in Bulgarian for foreigners. Lecturers from the Department participate in National and international interdisciplinary and educational projects in the field of pragmatics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, political science, theory and practice of translation, etc., as well as in international scientific conferences, translate economic and fiction literature, documents and regulations for Bulgarian and international organizations. Lecturers from the Department have longstanding close collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Science in relation to the national competitions in Spanish, French and Russian language as well as to state matriculation exams in English and German language in capacity of chairmen of commissions, experts – appraisers, examiners, etc. The Department organizes year-round language courses and courses for prospective students at the School for Foreign Languages Training to the Division for Institute of Postgraduate Qualification at UNWE that was established on February, 16th, 2005 by the Academic Council Decision of UNWE.
