1966

New Department

On June 13, 1966, by Order No. 2584 of the Minister of National Education, a new department was established at the then Higher Institute of Economics under the name “Business Management and Machine Processing of Economic Information”.

1967

New Degree Program

By Resolution No. 327 of the Council of Ministers dated July 22, 1967, a new degree program, “Organization of Machine Processing of Economic Information”, was established. Head of the Department: Prof. Dr. Rumen Dimov Yаnakiev.

1974

“Organization and Design of Economic Information Processing”

In 1974, the department and the corresponding degree program were renamed “Organization and Design of Economic Information Processing”, abbreviated as ODEIP. Heads of the Department: Prof. Dr. Atanas Yankov Ganev (1974–1976) and Prof. Dr. Angel Kirilov Bachvarov (1976–1986).

1986

“Automated Processing of Socio-Economic Information”

In 1986, the department was renamed “Automated Processing of Socio-Economic Information”, while the degree program was renamed “Socio-Economic Information”. Heads of the Department: Prof. Dr. Angel Kirilov Bachvarov (1986–1990) and Sergey Stoilkov Mitkov (1990–1991).

1991

“Management and Informatics”

In 1991, a departmental structure was introduced at UNWE, and the department was renamed the “Management and Informatics” Department. Head of the Department: Sergey Stoilkov Mitkov (1991–1993).

1992

“Economic Informatics”

In 1992, the department was renamed “Informatics”, while the degree program was renamed “Economic Informatics”. Head of the Department: Sergey Stoilkov Mitkov (1991–1993).

1994

“Informatics”

In 1994, the faculty structure was restored at UNWE, and from then on, the “Informatics” Department became the “Informatics” Department within a faculty structure. The degree program was also renamed “Informatics”. Head of the Department: Assoc. Prof. Evgeniy Radev.

2003

“Business Informatics”

In 2003, the degree program was given a new name: “Business Informatics”. Head of the Department: Assoc. Prof. Evgeniy Radev.

2008

“Business Informatics and Communications”

In 2008, the department incorporated the former “Economics and Management of Communications” Department, establishing a section within the department dedicated to Communications Economics. The department was renamed “Information Technologies and Communications”, offering two degree programs: “Business Informatics” and “Communications Economics”. Head of the Department: Prof. Dr. Valentin Kisimov (2008–2016).

2016

On December 6–7, 2013, the 3rd International Conference “Application of Information and Communication Technologies in Economics and Education” will be held at UNWE.

“In the contemporary conditions of scientific and technological development in all areas of human activity, the continuous updating of the knowledge of lecturers and researchers in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is an essential requirement, particularly in a global economic and financial crisis.

Defining long-term research tasks in this field is of strategic importance, which is even more relevant for young researchers, assistants, and doctoral students.

A number of Bulgarian universities with ICT departments regularly organize prestigious international scientific events in the form of conferences, seminars, and workshops, with the participation of prominent international scholars and lecturers in this field.

On this basis, the conference aims to:

Identify current issues related to the application of ICT in economics;
Identify advanced research areas of long-term importance in the field of ICT with regard to their application in economics and education;
Identify opportunities for applying the most modern ICT tools, methods, methodologies, and information systems in economics and education;
Establish a scientific forum for disseminating the achievements of UNWE researchers in the field of ICT and enhancing the international prestige of UNWE;

Rules and guidelines for defending diploma projects

This page contains essential information, deadlines, and technical instructions related to the preparation and defense of diploma projects for students in the “Bachelor” degree program. A mandatory requirement for admission to the defense is the successful completion of all exams.

Moodle course for diploma projects defense

If you completed your studies in previous years but are now preparing to defend your diploma project and do not have access to the Moodle course, please write to: stateExam.itc@unwe.bg or ivonavelkova@unwe.bg. Please note that if you graduated in 2020 or earlier, it is important to contact the “Bachelor” Office to confirm whether you have a state exam.

1. Selection of topic and type of application

The selection of a topic and type of application for the diploma project is carried out through the BPM system within the announced deadlines for the respective session. More information can be found HERE. Students must make their selection within the deadline, as the system will not allow changes after it expires.

2. Work on the diploma project and corrections

After submitting the initial project in the system, the diploma project is reviewed by a consultant assigned by the department. If necessary, the project may be returned for corrections, and the student must address the comments and resubmit it within the specified deadline through BPM.

3. Submission of the diploma project

The final submission of the diploma project is done exclusively through the BPM system, in accordance with the schedule for the respective session (winter / summer / autumn).

4. Plagiarism check by students

According to Article 2 of the UNWE document “Temporary rules for electronic verification of the originality of diploma papers (master’s theses),” the student (author of the diploma project) personally performs the electronic originality check and sends the results to their consultant. The check is requested through an electronic application in the UNWE system at the following link: https://shorturl.at/RPzdd. Without this check, you cannot be admitted to the defense.

5. Presentation and defense

The presentation of the diploma project during the defense is carried out on a personal laptop/computer. The connection to the multimedia is via HDMI cable; therefore, if your device does not have an HDMI interface, you must provide an appropriate adapter.

6. Compliance with deadlines

1. Topic selection

The selection of a topic for the master’s thesis is carried out through the BPM system within the announced deadlines for the respective session. More information can be found HERE. The topics are published by the department’s lecturers, and the choice is made among them. If you wish to work with a specific lecturer who has not posted a topic or you want to refine an existing one, you may contact them to clarify the details. 3. Submission of the completed master’s thesis

National Competition in Applied Informatics

The Department of Information Technologies and Communications (ITC) at the UNWE is organizing a National Competition in Applied Informatics for students in the 12th grade (academic year 2025–2026), held as an individual electronic test. The competition will take place on March 21, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. at the UNWE Test Center (Sofia), with a duration of 60 minutes and evaluation by a point system.
The top students graduating in 2025/2026, by decision of the Academic Council, are recognized with an excellent grade (6.00) for the competitive exam at the UNWE for the specialty "Business Informatics and Communications", and it is also possible to rank in the program with teaching in English upon fulfillment of the conditions under the current regulations; candidates for other specialties participate in the ranking according to the general order.

Candidates can also qualify for the specialty "Business Informatics and Communications (Taught in English)" if they meet one of the following conditions:

Hold an English language certificate corresponding to at least B2 level under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR);
Have graduated from a specialized language high school or a specialized language class at a general education school with intensive English-language instruction;
Have successfully passed the Foreign Language Entrance Examination (English) with a grade of at least Good (4.00).

Applicants wishing to enroll in other degree programs may participate in the admission ranking in accordance with the procedures established by the Regulations for Admission of Students to Bachelor's and Master's Degree Programs after Secondary Education for the Law Specialty at the UNWE.

Educational Objectives

The preparation of students in the specialty is broad-based. It includes disciplines related to modern information systems and technologies, as well as economic disciplines.

The curriculum offers a strong theoretical foundation complemented by extensive practical training. It focuses on developing professional knowledge and skills in the design, development, implementation, maintenance, and enhancement of information systems and software applications that support business processes and organizational management at various levels.

During the training process, students in the specialty have the opportunity to participate in the implementation of applied projects for practical problems, in scientific projects together with their lecturers, in various internship programs and international exchange programs.

Students acquire knowledge and skills related to:

Application development based on widely used technologies and programming languages ??.NET/ASP.NET/ASP.MVC/C#, J2EE/Java, HTML/CSS/JavaScript.
Mobile application development.
Database design, administration and development.
Computer networks and system software.
Business process analysis and modeling - BPM.
Administration and implementation of ERP systems.
Design and development of analytical and business intelligence systems.

The program is delivered entirely in English, providing students with an international learning environment and preparing them for careers in the global job market.

Through comprehensive English language training and the acquisition of specialized terminology in the fields of business informatics and information technologies, students develop the communication skills and professional competence required to adapt quickly and successfully to diverse international and multicultural work environments.

Fields of professional development

Graduates of the specialty can find employment in various areas of business: software companies, state and public administration, financial institutions and banks, companies and educational institutions. Graduates of the specialty can find employment in national and international companies as business analysts and designers of information systems; developers of information systems, web systems and mobile applications; implementers of information systems; administrators of information systems; managers of IT projects and teams; QA specialists, etc.

In 2023, the Business Informatics and Communications Program celebrates its 55th anniversary. Since its establishment, it has remained one of the most desired degree programs at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE).

Speciality Business Informatics has over 35-year history under various names at UNWE. The preparation of students is widely profiled and includes disciplines related to the modern information technology and information systems as also disciplines of mathematics, economics, quantitative methods in management, etc.

The training provides the necessary theoretical knowledge and at the same time it has an applied character. Its purpose is to make graduates skilled to develop software products as well as to implement the activities as designing, programming, incorporation and maintenance of the management information systems serving the different levels of management bodies.

The development and exploitation of software products for service of the office and management provide for graduates a realization associated with the creation of application software and Web applications and sites, the implementation of modern information technologies in various economic activities as well as in the field of publishing systems.

The speciality graduates can work in software houses, in different fields of economic activity that in particular includes state and public administration, financial institutions and banks, companies and educational institutions where they can work as developers, administrators and incorporators of information systems, project managers and many others.
