Dear Graduate Students,

Please pay attention to the following:

You are kindly requested to familiarize yourselves with the Internal Rules for Organizing and Conducting the Defense of Master Theses and the Procedure for Submission, Review and Defense of Master Theses in the Department of International Economic Relations and Business.

For submitting a master thesis topic and proposing a scientific supervisor, students must use the Application Form template, which should be submitted to the Department within the specified deadlines. The master thesis topic is finalized and agreed upon in consultation with the scientific supervisor. When selecting a supervisor, students may consult the areas of scientific interests and professional competences of the lecturers, published in their university blogs – in the section “Research Activity” → “Research Interests”. Information about the academic staff can be found here.

While developing the master thesis, students must strictly follow the requirements regarding structure, content, length, citation and technical formatting described in the document “Master Thesis Template”.

The originality (plagiarism) check is mandatory and is carried out through the officially approved UNWE electronic system after approval by the scientific supervisor. The originality check can be performed here.

The Declaration of Authorship must be signed by the graduate student and attached to the final version of the master thesis.

Compliance with deadlines and instructions is mandatory. Failure to comply may result in non-admission to the defense session.

The master thesis review is prepared by a reviewer appointed by the Department using an approved template. The template includes the main evaluation criteria, including:

• formulation of thesis statement and research objectives;
• theoretical preparation and analytical approach;
• independence of the research;
• justification of conclusions;
• use and citation of scientific literature.

The Department of "International Economic Relations and Business" offers two bachelor's programs:

1. International Economic Relations (see Course Curriculum)
2. International Economic Relations in English (See Course Curriculum)

Both Bachelor degrees last 4 years (8 semesters). The Bachelor "International economic relations in English" is carried out entirely in English.

Program Overview

Duration: 4 years (8 semesters) for both bachelor programs.
Language: One is taught in Bulgarian, the other fully in English .

Master program "INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS MANAGEMENT" that is held completely online.

The program aims to give contemporary knowledge and to develop skills for management of international projects. THE DEPARTMENT OF "INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC RELATIONS AND BUSINESS" OFFERS THE FOLLOWING MASTER PROGRAMS IN ENGLISH:

MASTER PROGRAM IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

The master program in International Business includes two semesters. It is developed on the basis of consultations with managers of leading Bulgarian companies that participate in international business, and with representatives of the state administration that regulate this activity. It has a strong European orientation and is in line with the latest trends in the development of the global economy.

The purpose of the program is to prepare students for work in organizations with international economic activities. Graduates fulfil the specific requirements for holding positions at senior and middle management level in state and local administration and in companies with international operations. They have the necessary qualifications to work in international economic, commercial and financial institutions, as well as in multinational companies.

COURSE CURRICULUM

MASTER PROGRAM IN CLIMATE CHANGE & INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

The aim of the program is to prepare a new type of specialists with interdisciplinary knowledge about climate change and international business and opportunities for career in the economic and financial sectors, as well as in the state administration and non-governmental sector.

The master degree includes courses from various fields of knowledge, incl. climate and climate change, legal regulation of the fight for climate change in the EU, international climate finance, decarbonization and carbon trading, corporate sustainability, incl. business models and disclosure; international business operations and climate change, climate change and project finance. A logical transition to disciplines with an applied orientation is the group of disciplines in "Specialized training". They include digitization and climate change; ISO standards, IAS and corporate sustainability standards, carbon accounting; social dimensions of climate change.

Graduates of the "Climate and International Business" master degree possess knowledge, skills and competencies that correspond to the National Qualification Framework of the Republic of Bulgaria (Level 7) and the European Reference Framework of Key Competences for Lifelong Learning. In parallel, they acquire new knowledge corresponding to the new strategic directions of development of the national and economic, social and political systems.

COURSE CURRICULUM

ONLINE MASTER PROGRAM IN DIGITAL MARKETING

The master programme is prepared and implemented together with practitioners from digital marketing agencies in Bulgaria. Students get a comprehensive understanding of the nature of digital marketing, its integration into the company's overall marketing strategy, the use of digital marketing channels, the planning and execution of digital campaigns. They acquire knowledge and skills to use business intelligence systems, implement software business solutions for customer relations, as well as navigate the legal issues of digital business regulation at the national and international level.

Graduates of the master degree can be successfully integrated in various spheres of marketing activity, both in small and medium-sized enterprises and in large international companies. State and local administrations are also a possible career field, especially where the participation of marketing specialists is necessary for the implementation of communication with various groups of stakeholders.

DUAL MASTER PROGRAM IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES OF ROME

(GRADUATES OBTAIN TWO DIPLOMAS FROM THE TWO UNIVERSITIES)

The dual master program is held jointly by the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) in Sofia, Bulgaria and the University of International Studies of Rome (Università degli studi Internazionali di Roma - UNINT) in Rome, Italy.

It is designed for bachelors from various professional fields. It aims to develop knowledge, skills and competencies in the field of international business. The training is practically oriented. The master program lasts 4 semesters. The first two semesters take place at UNWE, Sofia, and the third and fourth - at UNINT, Rome.

At the end of their studies, the graduates receive two diplomas for a completed master's degree taught in English - issued respectively by UNINT and UNWE. According to the agreement signed between the two universities, the education fees for Bulgarian students is the same for all semesters and is paid at UNWE. The Bulgarian students in the dual master program are entitled to a scholarship under the "Erasmus +" program for the two semesters in which they study at UNINT - Rome.

DUAL MASTER PROGRAM IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND GOVERNANCE WITH SHANGHAI JIAO TONG UNIVERSITY

(GRADUATES OBTAIN TWO DIPLOMAS FROM THE TWO UNIVERSITIES)

The dual master's program 'International Business and Governance,' offered by the Department of International Economic Relations and Business at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) in Sofia (Bulgaria), in collaboration with the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) in Shanghai (China), is designed for bachelor's graduates from diverse professional backgrounds. The program equips master's students with knowledge and practical skills in the field of international business and public policy.

Instruction is conducted entirely in English. The program spans four semesters: the first two semesters are held at the UNWE in Bulgaria's capital city of Sofia, and the third and fourth semesters take place in Shanghai, the largest commercial, financial, and economic center in China. Upon completion of their studies, graduates receive two diplomas: one in 'International Business' from UNWE and another in 'Public Administration' from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Pursuant to the agreement between the two universities, Bulgarian students cover tuition fees for the first two semesters at UNWE, while for the third and fourth semesters, they pay tuition fees to Shanghai Jiao Tong University (the annual fee in 2023 is 70,000 yuan). Students also have the opportunity to apply for a Chinese government scholarship, which covers tuition fees, medical insurance, and accommodation in a dormitory. Annually, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria announces a competition for this scholarship under the bilateral Agreement of Cooperation in the field of education with the People's Republic of China.

Established in 1896, Shanghai Jiao Tong University stands as one of China's most prestigious higher education institutions and consistently ranks among the world's top 50 universities (46th in the QS World University Rankings 2023). The campus hosting the 'International Business and Governance' master's program is situated in the heart of Shanghai, a bustling metropolis of 25 million inhabitants. The campus is equipped with modern classrooms, libraries, sports facilities, student lounges, and dormitories.

In cases where travel to China becomes unfeasible, students have the option to transfer to the 'International Business in English' master's program, which mirrors the curriculum of the first two semesters of the dual program.

Study practice/Pre-graduate internship

In the first semester of their studies, students in the master programs "INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS" and "INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TAUGHT IN ENGLISH", and in the second semester for the students in the master programs "DUAL MASTER'S PROGRAM IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF INTERNATIONAL SCIENCES - ROME)" and "DUAL MASTER'S PROGRAM IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND GOVERNANCE WITH SHANGHAI JIAO TONG UNIVERSITY - CHINA)" must carry out a study practice (internship). Its purpose is the students to practise what they have acquired during their study as knowledge and skills, and to solve practical problems.

Each student has the freedom to choose where to carry out their internship, the only condition being that the organization they have chosen operates internationally.

This academic practice is included as a separate discipline in the curriculum of the above-mentioned specialties. At the end of the respective semester, in December - January, respectively in May - June, the Department of "International Economic Relations and Business" sets dates, on which students present the results of their internship experience and share impressions of the companies and tasks of internship. When presenting their internship, students must submit a written report and evaluation from the employer where they carried out the internship.

The "International Economic Relations and Business" department educates students in all educational and qualification degrees - "Bachelor", "Master" and "Doctor".

At the "Bachelor" level , the department prepares specialists in international economic relations in Bulgarian and English language.

The Master programs are diverse and interdisciplinary, both in Bulgarian and in English.

The department has over 30 doctoral students studying full-time, part-time and in free form.

In the fourth year of their studies, in the eighth (last) semester, students in the bachelor programmes "International Economic Relations" and "International Economic Relations taught in English Language" must complete an internship. Its goal is students to solve practical tasks and gain practical skills.

Each student has the freedom to choose where to carry out their internship, the only condition being that the company/ organization's acivtity is connected with international business.

The internship is included as a separate discipline in the curriculum of the bachelor programme. At the end of the last semester, in the month of May, the "International Economic Relations and Business" department sets the dates, on which the students are expected to present their internship experience and impressions.
